Mission<\/strong><\/p>

The mission of the English Department of General Studies, consonant with the mission of the Faculty and that of the university system, is to contribute to “forming educated Puerto Ricans, capable of understanding the society in which they live and of incorporating themselves in the process of social change” (Organic Law, 1990). For this, it is our responsibility to develop in all our students the capacity to think critically, to communicate effectively and to act independently and creatively. These capabilities will allow active and critical participation in the democratic political process, facilitating the full compliance of their personal, family, social and occupational responsibilities.<\/p>

Our maximum aspiration, consonant with that of the Campus as expressed in the Plan of Action Strategies (1997), is academic excellence. We promote “the integral formation of students in all their dimensions: intellectual curiosity, critical capacity, continuous learning, effective communication, appreciation and cultivation of ethical and aesthetic values, participation in the processes of the Campus, as well as reflection and social responsibility” (Plan of Action Strategies, 1997). Similarly, we promote research and creative action in such a way that teachers and students contribute to knowledge and its interconnections with the various disciplines.<\/p>

Reading is fundamental in our courses. The goal is to cultivate in the students their intellectual, analytical and interpretative potential so that, as adult citizens, they can make a responsible and profitable reading of multiple subjects, independently of the discipline. The diversity of subjects, genres and types of selections in the English courses are chosen for this purpose, paying special attention to their aesthetic and ethical dimensions.<\/p>

Equally important is writing. In order to write effectively, not only does one have to handle the fundamental linguistic structures of the language, but also think critically. The study of the basic structures of the language, reading, reflection and discussion are essential in this process. Therefore, in our English courses, reading, the study of linguistic structures and processes, oral communication, and writing are complementary and inseparable.<\/p>

On the other hand, our main objective is to develop and offer English courses at different levels, as well as other educational experiences, that meet the needs of our students, while incorporating the philosophical and didactic approach of general education.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Misi\u00f3n<\/strong><\/p>

La misi\u00f3n del Departamento de Ingl\u00e9s de Estudios Generales, c\u00f3nsona con la misi\u00f3n de esta Facultad y la del sistema universitario, es contribuir a “formar un puertorrique\u00f1o educado, capaz de entender la sociedad en que vive y de incorporarse en el proceso de cambio social” (Ley Org\u00e1nica, 1990). Para esto, es nuestra responsabilidad desarrollar en todos nuestros estudiantes la capacidad de pensar cr\u00edticamente, de comunicarse efectivamente y de actuar de forma independiente y creativa. Estas capacidades le permitir\u00e1n la participaci\u00f3n activa y cr\u00edtica en el proceso pol\u00edtico democr\u00e1tico facilitando el cabal cumplimiento de sus responsabilidades personales, familiares, sociales y ocupacionales.<\/span><\/p>

Nuestra aspiraci\u00f3n m\u00e1xima, c\u00f3nsona con la del Recinto seg\u00fan expresa el Plan de Estrategias de Acci\u00f3n (1997), lo es la excelencia acad\u00e9mica. Propiciamos “la formaci\u00f3n integral de los estudiantes en todas sus dimensiones: curiosidad intelectual, capacidad cr\u00edtica, aprendizaje continuo, comunicaci\u00f3n efectiva, aprecio y cultivo de valores \u00e9ticos y est\u00e9ticos, participaci\u00f3n en los procesos del Recinto, as\u00ed como la reflexi\u00f3n y la responsabilidad social” (Plan de Estrategias de Acci\u00f3n, 1997). De igual manera, propiciamos la investigaci\u00f3n y la acci\u00f3n creadora de forma tal que docentes y estudiantes aporten a los saberes y sus interconexiones con las diversas disciplinas.<\/span><\/p>

La lectura es fundamental en nuestros cursos. Estos aspiran a cultivar en los estudiantes su potencial intelectual, anal\u00edtico e interpretativo para que, como ciudadanos adultos, puedan hacer una lectura responsable y provechosa de m\u00faltiples temas, independientemente de la disciplina. La diversidad de temas, g\u00e9neros y tipos de selecciones en los cursos de ingl\u00e9s se escogen con este prop\u00f3sito, prestando especial atenci\u00f3n a sus dimensiones est\u00e9ticas y \u00e9ticas.<\/span><\/p>

Igualmente importante es la redacci\u00f3n. Para escribir eficazmente no s\u00f3lo se tienen que manejar las estructuras ling\u00fc\u00edsticas fundamentales del idioma, sino tambi\u00e9n pensar de forma cr\u00edtica. El estudio de las estructuras b\u00e1sicas de la lengua, la lectura, la reflexi\u00f3n y la discusi\u00f3n son imprescindibles en este proceso. Por lo tanto, en nuestros cursos de ingl\u00e9s, la lectura, el estudio de estructuras y procesos ling\u00fc\u00edsticos, la comunicaci\u00f3n oral, y la redacci\u00f3n son aspectos complementarios e inseparables.<\/span><\/p>
